Recently I had a nice conversation with a recruiter. As I’ve sat on both sides of the table, he asked with questions I ask (and was asked) in the interviews and which are my favorites. Maybe you have the same question, because you are preparing for an interview for a designer role or you are interviewing one.

Even if you don’t prepare for an interview, you should be able to answer these questions.

General Questions (For All Levels)

• How do you define “good” UX design and why is it important?
• Can you name an example of a product with excellent UX design and explain what makes it stand out?
• How do you stay up-to-date with current trends and developments in UX design?
• Describe a challenging stakeholder you have worked with and how you managed the situation.
• How do you measure the success of a UX design you have crafted?

Questions for Junior UX Designers

• Can you describe a project where you conducted user research? What were your key findings?
• How do you handle feedback that contradicts your design approach?
• Describe the process you use for creating wireframes.
• What tools do you use for UX design and why?
• How would you explain the importance of usability to someone who is not a designer?

Questions for Intermediate UX Designers

• Tell us about a project where you conducted user testing. What methods did you use and why?
• How do you integrate stakeholder needs into your design decisions?
• Describe a complex user flow that you designed. What challenges did you encounter and how did you resolve them?
• How would you prioritize and plan the implementation of a new feature?
• Can you give an example of how you have used data analytics in your design process?

Questions for Senior UX Designers

• How do you lead a design team in a large-scale project? Can you give a specific example?
• Describe a situation where you had to realign the UX strategy of a product or service.
• How do you improve the user experience of an existing product?
• How do you foster innovation in UX design within your team?
• Can you name a UX challenge you would like to tackle in a future project?
